Welcome back to our series of mending and upcycling workshops with the amazing charity and social enterprise Circle Collective.

These workshops are all about encouraging people to think more about where their clothes come from and where they go when they are ‘thrown away’ and the positive environmental impact of repairing and re-wearing what you already own or buying things that are pre-loved.

This workshop is all about slashing, weaving, knotting and tying.  it wil all be done by hand with scissors and a needle and thread. It works best with stretch fabrics. 

We’ll be using Circle Collective dead stock or feel free to bring along something to upcycle and we'll show you a range of  techniques to update your items.

These workshops will be facilitated by Make Mee Studio & Circle Collective trainees thanks to the Lewisham Repair, Reuse, Recycle grants & Youth First Legacy Fund.

Maybe you have a holey sock, a favourite moth eaten jumper, torn jeans you want to save but don’t know how. This workshop will take you through the basics of woven darning. We will show you tips for visible and invisible mending. We’ll also spend time covering how to source and match the right yarns for your garment and equipment essentials. You can bring your holey item and get straight to it or we’ll have plenty of fabrics scraps you can practice on.

Did you know if the active life on an item of clothing is extended by 9 months it would reduce carbon waste and water footprints by around 20-30% each. Not only is it mending restorative for your garments, it a slow and mindful technique, it can be great for unwinding, relaxing and taking your mind off other things. The only thing to be wary of….  it can become seriously addictive; you'll be hunting for holey clothes to repair.

The group had very different levels of experience, and Jaime managed this amazingly, making sure that everyone had the chance to learn things suited to their needs. We also learned lots about materials and tooling, some of which was transformational for my mending journey!

Introduction To Woven Darning  @ Something Good Workshops 

We’ll be at [Something Good Workshops in Deptford ](https://www.somethinggoodworkshops.co.uk/)for the second part of our intro to darning specials!

This time we’ll show you how to do some Scotch and Swiss Darning, a little bit more fiddley than regular woven darning but both great techniques to learn for your repair repertoire!

Scotch darning can be used on a whole load of items.  It has a little bit of stretch to it, it has more of a ‘net’ struture than woven darning. We’ll also cover Honeycomb darning which is a similar technique but worked in a circle.

Swiss Darning is perfect for mending knitted garments that have a regular knit pattern. We will begin by working on a duplicate stitch, then work up to creating out scaffold stitch and how to Swiss darn. We will also show you how to create a Swiss darn look with a latch hook.

Depending on the garment you bring we may get you to practise Swiss darning on some chunkier knit fabric, it can be a much trickier to try and do on a tiny knit for the first time.

If none of that makes any sense to you, do not fear we will guide you through it! We will show you tips for visible and invisible mending. We’ll also spend time covering how to source and match the right yarns for your garment and equipment essentials. You can bring your holey item and get straight to it or we’ll have plenty of fabrics scraps you can practice on.

Suitable for people with some experience stitching, even if it’s just basic embroidery or experienced stitchers also welcome!

This workshop is good for people who have a little bit of experience sewing, if you have never sewn before our Intro to Darning the week before this one is a great first step!

Make Mee Studio

They’ll get stuck into sewing, crafting and designing projects to instill a sense of confidence and pride. These sessions are open to kids of all sewing abilities, from complete newbies to confident creators. Regardless of their ability, they’ll leave with new knowledge and progress on projects appropriate to their skill level. 

This is a great extracurricular activity that will give your child transferable life skills. They’ll learn to use a sewing machine and discover loads of other craft and design techniques including: appliqué, embroidery, free machining, dressmaking, pattern cutting, and much, much more! 

**What’ll they make**

Each child will tackle a project of their choosing, individually guided by one of our friendly and experienced teachers. We have a huge range of projects on offer so they can choose to make something they will love and cherish for years to come. 

They can also choose fabric and trims available in our studio. We have everything, from regular cotton and standard buttons, to plush faux fur and sequins – a dream for imaginative young makers!   

Some of our projects include: cuddlies, bags, t-shirts, skirts, trousers, cushions the list goes on…

**Who’s it for?**

These sessions are suitable for budding sewers of all abilities, for children in year 2 and above.  Please note, we have recently had to increase the age criteria so please email if you child is 6 but in year 1. 
They can be a great help for GSCE and A-level work, and can also go towards D of E skills.

This session can also serve as a taster to see if your child would like to sign up for our After School Club or Holiday Classes. 

Please note: we cannot offer childcare over lunch time.

**Materials**

We have a selection of fabrics and trims in the studio which you can purchase or you can bring your own. You can bring your own machine if you want to practise on it or use ours.

I attended a sewing surgery last week to make a second pair of trousers. As I had already completed the trouser-making course, I was able to see how much I had progressed. I was able to make the second pair with much less assistance. The teachers were on hand at all times to help me, and their reassurance and praise gave me the confidence to work much more independently than the first time. I feel a real sense of achievement. 

One of the best things about the studio is it has an overlocking machine. This means I was able to make the hems on my trousers look professional, and vastly improves the quality of the garment. There is no difference in quality than something that has been bought in a shop, except I got to design it myself.

I had an amazing time at the sewing surgery. I wanted to take in and hem a skirt and don’t have that much experience. The teachers were so helpful and patient with me! My skirt looks great and I can now wear it again. I would definitely reccomend to a friend.

Tracey and Jamie are both excellent tutors. They have lots of different machines to use, including two overlockers. Nothing is too much trouble you even get home made cake! They even have an answer for the most difficult sewing fabrics! Definitely recommend going along with any sewing project you are stuck on.

Loved the class. I am a real beginner but Tracey was patient , helpful and fun.  I took a shirt with me to take in and came away with a properly fitting garment !

I really enjoyed this class. My new year's resolution has been to get back into sewing, and I was looking for a class that would allow me to get stuck in! Make Mee was perfect for this - Jaime was a great teacher, reminding me of the various skills I had forgotten, while helping me to take up a pair of trousers at the same time!

Not to mention the stunning "Garden Studio" - so cosy! And delicious brownies to accompany the workshop. What could be better. Would highly recommend.

Sessions at the sewing surgery have helped me rediscover my enjoyment of sewing - something I'd not done since my teens but am now doing every week. 

With the help of Jaime and Tracey I'm finishing my second fully-fitted, super-funky dress and am beginning to work independently, sewing other items at home based on the patterns and techniques I've learned.

Fantastic extended session - the extra hour made a huge difference as I was starting a new project so there was lots of prep: deciding on placement of pattern pieces with a very bold print, then cutting it all out. 
I’d taken along several pattern options and some expensive dress fabric, so it needed to be right. The advice snd help I received was spot on: make a toile as a practice piece rather than risk a poorly fitting dress made with a pattern I’d not tried before. Although making a toile means it will take longer to make the dress I’d planned, I was able to buy some fantastic fabric on the day for a nominal amount and, of course, will end up with two incredible dresses eventually - and confidence in the skills I’ve learned along the way. 
The studio had absolutely everything I need and lots of space for cutting out, even though several others were also cutting out patterns there. The knowledge and advice plus the friendly tutors make learning to sew there a real joy!

I had a great time learning how to make dungarees.  Josh was a great teacher and very patient and fun. It was a great way to escape for a couple of hours and create something. I would highly recommend the classes.

Fantastic! I was working on a project at home and got stuck - the surgery was the perfect opportunity for me. The teacher, Amelie spotted a mistake and was able to give me the little bit of help and confidence I needed to complete my project. The space at Crofton Park Library is lovely - a calm yet purposeful space which was a joy to work in. Will definitely be back in the future.
